In late June, a significant weather event brought a massive amount of Saharan dust from North Africa to Italy, causing notable disruptions.
The phenomenon, linked to climate change, saw intense high-pressure systems from the subtropical regions pushing this dust northward.
This is not an entirely new occurrence; however, its frequency and intensity have increased in recent years.
The dust created a distinctive yellowish hue in the sky, a result of the fine particles suspended in the atmosphere.
This gave the sky an opaque, yellow appearance and significantly reduced air quality.
Breathing became more challenging, exacerbating the effects of the already extreme heat. Such conditions make everyday activities more strenuous and can have severe health impacts, particularly for those with respiratory issues.
The primary cause of this dust influx is the high-pressure systems from Africa, which, combined with the region's extreme heat, lift and carry the dust particles across the Mediterranean.
Once the dust reaches countries like Italy, it can linger for days, leading to the yellow skies and respiratory difficulties observed during such events
